张衡，字平子，东汉建初三年（公元78年）生于南阳郡西鄂县石桥镇（今河南省南阳县）。他就是我国1800多年前出现的一位伟大的科学家，是天文学的奠基者，是地震学的鼻祖。人民为了纪念这位伟大的科学家，于1956年重新修复了“平子读书台”和张衡墓。1970年国际天文台把月球背面的一座环形山命名为“张衡山”，1977年又把太阳系中一个编号为1082的小行星命名为“张衡星”，以此来纪念张衡为人类做出的重大贡献。
