How do you understand the subtitle of <<苔丝>>

The subtitle of the novel is a Pure Woman Faithfully Portrayed. All things considered, was Tess a pure woman? Why or Why not?

　　a. pure here not refers to the physical meaning, but spiritual one. Throughout the novel, Tess was loyal to her true feelings. She remained her loyalty to Angel. Alec only claimed her body. She was spiritually with Angel all the time.
　　b. She is responsible and does her best for the family. As the eldest child of the family (6 younger brothers and sisters, from 3 to 11 years old), she has to help the parents to support the whole family. She would sacrifice herself for the sake of the whole family. (After his father died, the whole family are threatened with starvation. It is Alec who gives much concern and support to her. She went to Alec’s family and comes back to Alec.)
