in the direction是说“以”一个什么样的 “方向” ，我们有“向四面八方”的词组in all directions，in不能换成感觉上想要用的“to”；
而at这个介词表示地点，是说处在一个什么样的 “方位”；
还没有见过on the direction 有关的用法

in the direction
朝某一方向前进，说话的人正往那里去
at the direction
指某物在某一方向，说话者在诉说某一事物的方位
