There is no place in all Africa — or in the world — quite like Nairobi National Park. It covers only forty square miles, but it is a whole miniature world of unconfined wildlife.
The park lies close to the city of Nairobi. In fact, it is said that hyenas come scavenging through the city streets at night. A taxi from Nairobi to the gates of the park takes only a quarter of an hour.
The hour before dusk is the best time to arrive. The sunset colors then can be quite wonderful. Most of the park is rolling grassland dotted with flat-topped acacia trees. There is little to block the view. Everything that moves is instantly seen.
On our first visit to the park, we had been inside the gate less than five minutes when we saw a lioness. She stood up beside us on the road. Then she strolled across to a rock that gave her a wide view. She squatted on her haunches there, a brown silhouette in the evening light.
