For the want of a nail, the shoe was lost;
for want of a shoe, the horse was lost;
for want of a horse, the rider was lost;
for want of the rider, the battle was lost;
for want of a battle, the kingdom was lost;
all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
这是讲拿破仑有一个士官很不拘小节,所以他就给这个士官讲了一个故事:以前有个国王要出去打一场关乎国家存亡的仗,于是就命令马夫给他的马换马掌,但是到后来发现马掌少了一个马蹄钉,但是又一时间找不到,于是国王就骑着这匹少钉了一个马蹄钉的马出兵了。
在拼杀冲刺的时候国王骑的这匹马的这个马掌因为少了一个钉子就掉了,马就摔倒了。敌人的马冲刺过来践踏踩死了这个国王,使得这场战争输了,这个国家也就亡了。
拿破仑借用这个故事告诉他的官兵不能忽视小事情,后来被引用告诫人们不要忽视小事情
