本设计在内容上分为单片机控制显示系统和PC机串口通信控制系统两部分组成。
第一部分以AT89S51单片机为基础，设计了单片机控制的显示系统。通过使用串行总线连接单片机和数码管,利用汇编语言对单片机进行编程，通过动态扫描方式来控制数码管的显示；第二部分是以PC机为基础，设计了PC机与单片机的接口电路以及PC机信息输入界面。利用89S51和PC机上已有的串行口设计出硬件电路和软件编程从而实现单片机与PC机短距离的简单通信。采用MAX232实现PC机与单片机之间的电平转换，采用简单的3线制连接方法实现通信，即将PC机和单片机的发送数据端与接收数据端交叉连接，两者的地线直接相连，PC机上采用了现有的串口调试助手软件，单片机则利用汇编语言进行编程。
该设计使用资源少，结构简单，性能可靠，操作容易，可以运用于各种体育比赛中。
