不同的民族服饰中，往往有一些与众不同的衣物或者饰物，表现出强烈的该民族的特色，是该民族服饰文化中不可或缺的重要的一部分，这些特殊的衣物合饰物，一般与御寒，遮盖，美观，财富，权力等等都没有直接的关系，但是，它们却在服饰中拥有了一种崇高或者说是神秘的意味。究其所包含的文化内容，大都与原始自然灵物崇拜或者某种宗教信仰有关系，相当一部分就是直接是某种自然崇拜或者宗教信仰的“遗留”。

在我国许多民族中都有他们自己所崇拜的图腾，都有图腾信仰。所谓的图腾信仰，就是指一个社会中的许多不同的群体各自认定一种动物或者植物作为其代表，各群体的成员对于代表他们的图腾都经常有很深的认同感，不但认为自己是图腾的子孙，而且觉得自己也具有该动物的各种特质，因此图腾的成员对于图腾怀有一种特殊的感情，并进而产生崇拜以及禁忌杀戮或者触摸的心理。
