我们对新的合作感到无比兴奋。在我们目睹签署这项《合作意向声明》的时候，我希望我们双方能更加倍努力地进行合作。我们代表着妇女、儿童、男人和所有想从北京医科大学这样的著名大学、从你们培养的医生和从你们所从事的研究中吸取知识的人们，我们希望能够更好地促进全世界人民的健康。
这项不平凡的合作的意义已远远超出了美国、中国和全世界公共卫生实践的范围，它还大大增进了我们两国之间加强科技合作的信誉。我要称赞所有在座的北京医科大学和美国疾病控制与预防中心的科学家们，你们为实现今天的《合作意向声明》付出了许多艰辛的劳动。我也想对你们将来的合作表示敬意。通过共同的合作，我们就能取得更大的成绩。也许到了21世纪，我们的子孙只能通过历史书籍而不是医学书籍来了解诸如脊柱裂这类疾病，我相信这是完全可以做到的。
我们要共同合作，开展必要的科学研究，然后把从北京医科大学这样著名大学所获得的知识传播给象我们今天看到的这位年轻母亲一样的妇女中去，传播到你们的国家、我们的国家和全世界。我们要对生活在城市和农村的贫困和边远的妇女给予特别的关注。如果我们这样做了，我们大家就会一起看到若干年后在改善公共卫生方面将取得巨大的成绩。这也意味着，我们将会看到更多的像今天我们见到的这位年轻母亲和她的女儿那样幸福的母亲和健康的儿童。
