In 1996, it was demonstrated that species of Bocconia L.
genus can be used as an additional source of benzo[c]phenanthridine
alkaloids [1]. However, to our knowledge, no exhaustive
quantitative data on the content of sanguinarine and
chelerythrine in these plants were published.
This work was aimed at a comparative quantitative determination
of sanguinarine and chelerythrine in the leaves of
Macleaya microcarpa (Maxim.) Fedde and Bocconia
fruitescens L. in order to assess the possibility of using the
latter species as a source of benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids.
In addition, we have studied effects of the extractant
type and the regime of extraction on the total yield of these
alkaloids.
The samples of leaves of both plants were taken from
three-year-old plants grown from seeds under identical
agrotechnical conditions. The seeds of Macleaya microcarpa
