2001年12月13日，第29届奥林匹克运动会组织委员会（简称北京奥组委）正式成立。
2003年8月3日，北京奥运会会徽“中国印———舞动的北京”在天坛祈年殿隆重发布。
2004年7月13日，2008年第13届残奥会会徽“天地人”在北京发布。
2004年8月29日，在雅典奥运会闭幕式上，北京市市长、北京奥组委执行主席王岐山从国际奥委会主席雅克·罗格手中接过奥运会会旗，标志着奥运会进入北京周期。
2005年6月26日，第29届奥运会主题口号“One World One Dream”（同一个世界同一个梦想）正式发布
2005年11月11日，第29届奥运会吉祥物在工人体育馆正式公布，五个形象为鱼、熊猫、奥运圣火、藏羚羊、金燕的福娃令人爱不释手，他们的名字分别是贝贝、晶晶、欢欢、迎迎、妮妮，即“北京欢迎你”。
2006年9月6日，北京残奥会吉祥物福牛乐乐发布。
