The molecules were inserted (and isolated) in insulating CH3(CH2)n-SH (alkanemonothiol) self-assembled monolayers and addressed with a Pt-Ir STM tip. Two contact arrangements were as follows: (A) a dithiolated [thiolate硫氢根] molecule was inserted in the SAM and physically contacted by the STM probe, or (B) a gold NP was chemically bonded to the topmost thiol after insertion. The STM tip then contacted the gold NP to complete the circuit. (C) Structures for the alkanedithiols studied here: C8d, C10d, C12d, and PETB. (D) The imaged sizes of the molecules are different for the bare dithiol and for the dithiol chemically bonded to Au NPs. An illustrative example is shown in a histogram of image sizes for C12d and C12d-Au. The average image width for C12d is 22.6 ± 5.0 Å, whereas that of C12d-Au is 63.0 ± 5.6 Å.
