我对这句话的疑问？

The accident was my fault, so I had to pay for the damage on the other car.

为什么不用damage to 这不是个固定搭配吗？意为“对......的损害" 为什么这里用 damage on ?

后半句话主干应该是..i pay for the damage....后面的on the other car 是用来修饰damage的。
而你说的damage to 是一个动词性质的词组，主要表现了damage这个动作，to 是一个指向性的介词。
你看在这句话里，damage 和on 不属于搭配的范畴。 是两块内容的。
