所以这个空应该选A 可是为什么正确答案是D

这个的确选D.
原因是school前缺少了一个冠词,school是一个可数名词,所以冠词是绝对不能省的,如果原句是Is this the school——you studied in last year ? 那你的分析绝对是正确的.
至于选D的原因,建议楼主把原句改成陈述句来理解:
This school is——you studied in last year .
D 的答案就自然选出来了.
因为没有冠词,所以this应该与school连着.
另外,个人经验,有些句子作为疑问句不好判断的时候,可以改成陈诉句.
如果选a的话，school前面应有一个the或是a
否则名词前面没有冠词，This is school__you studied in last year. 这个句子是不成立的。
至于你对题目的补充，把它换成陈述句语序就解决了
