问个新概念上的问题

就是新3上的（the loss of Titanic)中的一句话：the noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged. 我不理解为什么不用the noise was so faint that ...
我的语法实在不行，请大家帮帮我。谢谢了。
我问的不是so...that...句型，而是had been 与was 的区别。麻烦讲详细点．谢谢了！！

The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged.
响声很微弱以致无人想到船已遭到破坏

so...that..句式:如此...以至于....的意思

补充:因为整个是过去式,所以用had been ,过去的过去.相声狠微弱是发生在船遭到破坏之前.懂了嘛?

都可以，这里强调过去的过去

so ....that 如此 .. 以致于

so that句型啊，that后是结果状语从句啊，so前是原因，that后是结果，that是从属连词

过去完成时指过去的过去
the noise 得微弱在no one thought ...之前

这篇文章我也读过，这句话的意思是：由于这个声音非常轻，没人会想到船身已遭损坏。
全文的时态都是过去时，
再看这句话：The noise had been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged.“noise”开始发出应该是在人们想到之前的，“想到”用“thought ”过去时，那么过去的过去用过去完成时“had been ”
