一般来说，如果 (the xxx) 不在句首，the 是不用大写的。
不过 xxx 的首字母的确是要大写的：

... the Civil War
... the Taj Mahal
... the Nobel Peace Prize
... the Chinese

大都不要大写的
如Alexandrer the Great, the Great Wall.
但有时是需要大写的,如 the是公司名或书名的一部份.
