这里是倒装，但为什么不是过去完成时，有since啊？

就算是用完成时也不是过去完成时，因为since后面的they were married 40 years ago是过去时，所以即使是完成时也应该用现在完成时，即never once has the old couple quarrelled...
这是比较严格的语法规定，但在实际使用中，用过去式也没有问题的，因为这里没有需要太强调对现在的影响

也许讲的是已经死去了的COUPLE啊,就象你形容去世的人就一定是用过去时. 有时候句子分析必须联系上下文的,我就是那么理解的.

如果是阅读文章里的句子，就不要再扣了，过去时没有什么问题。
一定要扣的话 我觉得是 never once的原因，这里强调的是一次都没有，强调的不是完成的状态。试想一下 ，
他们仅吵过一次 they quarrelled only once。
他们曾吵过一次 they had quarrelled for once。

since they were married 40 years ago
和
since they have been married 40 years ago
都是对的

they had been married 就错了
因为 they are still married to each other
