Crude-oil futures dropped nearly $6 per barrel Tuesday to close at their lowest level in five months as Hurricane Gustav weakened to a tropical depression and spared the Gulf of Mexico the damage to oil gear many had feared.
But with three tropical storms still brewing in the Atlantic and a meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Sept. 9 in Vienna, crude prices recouped much of the day's declines and headed higher in Globex electronic trading.
Light, sweet crude oil for October delivery closed at $109.71 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, down $5.75, or 5%.
