在语言交际过程中，非语言交际与语言交际相辅相成，非语言交际能丰富且又准确地表达交际者的心理活动，交际者运用身体的自然特征和本能向对方传递信息，表达特定语意显露出有意识或无意识的行为，具有直显性。这种直显性有助于听话人准确推断．快而准地获取信息并进行反馈 例如在面试中，语言沟通无疑是影响面试成功与否的重要因素, 然而，另一个对面试成败同样重要的因素——非语言沟通，却没有引起足够的重视。
同样在跨文化交际活动中,也存在着语言交际和非语言交际, 由于文化不同,交际行为就会有诸多差异,交际活动也各有不同的交际规范，举手投足之间反映出的非语言含义就不一样,因此,要用外语进行有效活动交际时,在听别人说某种语言的同时还得了解说话人的手势、动作等所表示的意义,这就是说既要“听其言而知其行”,又要“观其行而知其言”
目前在我国的教学中，教师更多地注重对学生一般语言能力的培养，忽视跨文化交际能力的培养；注重语言交际行为的正确性、合理性和可接受性，忽视非语言交际行为和手段的文化差异极其影响，结果学生往往只能机械模仿背诵课本上的段落，而不顾交际的场合、对象以及目的和国家的文化因素，结果在实际的跨文化交际中常常被误解
