Foundations
Year 1
ML, a modern function-based language, is used to survey the whole of computer science, from data abstraction to algorithm design. Building on this base, you will cover the object-oriented language Java, Operating Systems, Discrete Mathematics, Algorithms, Digital Electronics, Finite Automata, Software Design and Professional Practice. Digital Electronics covers the fundamentals of digital components and circuits. Like the ML and Java papers, it involves laboratory work. Part IA is being re-developed for 2008-09 to better address the needs of today's students.

These courses take half your time with a further quarter is devoted to the necessary mathematical foundations. For most students this is provided through the Mathematics course from Part IA of the Natural Sciences Tripos.
