The structured activities introduced learners to the science and controversies
surrounding global warming. One of these activities took advantage of the Greenhouse Effect Visualizer to explore seasonal changes in solar radiation and their influences on earth’s surface temperatures. In the first part of this activity, students looked at incoming solar radiation at several different spatial resolutions to help develop an understanding of the concept of spatial averaging. They then were asked to characterize the way that incoming solar energy varies by latitude and by season and to explain this variation using knowledge they had gained through a prior activity in which they looked at the tilt of the earth’s axis relative to the sun in different seasons. In the final part of the activity they compared surface temperature visualizations with incoming solar energy to characterize the relationship between solar energy and temperature (Figure 6).
