因为地表没有很多植物覆盖和地震频繁的过去，这里提供给地质学家一个研究地球非常好的教室。在犹他州的许多地方，上亿年的地层暴露在日光下并叙说着地壳变动和地球的历史。在科罗拉多州和犹他州边界的恐龙国家纪念公园〈Dinosaur National Monument〉的沙岩层内发掘出来的上千块恐龙化石在全美国都有展出。犹他州数不尽的怪石也让人们发挥了不少的想象力，如外号叫 Watchman, the castle, court of the Patriarchs, Queen Victoria 和 Fairyland 的岩石就是很好的例子。在 Capital Reef 国家公园内的一个 100 英里长类似大堡礁的岩石就活生生的道尽地表形成的经过。
