海岸角大学成立于1962年，当时只有155名学生，海岸角大学成立之初与加纳大学具有特殊的关系。1971年，成为了独立的大学，开始颁发自己文凭。目前，学校拥有全日制注册学生16000人，非全日制学生21000人。
学校有八个学院，三个研究所。根据学校介绍，目前在非洲地区排名91位。
海岸角大学的教育学院是加纳最好的，也是学生人数最多的专业，主要为全国培养初高中教师，但是，也有学生毕业后从事其它职业。而艺术专业在加纳的名气最大。
海岸角大学医学院有7个系，250名学生，学制6年，每年学费约1200美元，而其它专业200-500美元。另外学校的体育专业，有学生232人，毕业生主要从事中小学老师或者俱乐部教练等。
海岸角大学占地面积很大，校园内树木繁茂，与加纳大学相比更有现代色彩。学校可以为7000名学生提供宿舍，另外还有250套住宅提供给教师。学校食堂散布在各处，为学生就近提供饮食，其中最小的食堂仅可以同时容纳30人左右，每个食堂均向学生和教师开放，每餐费用在3-15塞地（0.8-3.5美元）。
