请英语专家帮帮，有关meant这个词

Tendering for new business is a time-consuming process for the entire team, whether we win it or not, so adding a new customer to the list ust shows our efforts meant something.
这里为什么用meant不用mean啊？？
我觉得好困惑啊，查meant只说是mean的过去式和过去分词，可为什么很多情况好象是普通时态也用呢。。请高手帮帮啊！！！！！

这里的efforts是在adding a customer to the list 之前做出的努力，刚做出那个努力的时候并不知道这个努力是否是有意义的，等发现单子上增加了新的客户的时候，努力已经是过去的事情了，当然要用meant something

再举个例子，某人一个月前说股票会上涨，现在我们看到市场上股票真的涨了，就会说 The current market data show that he was right. 这里用was，同样是表达现在发生的某个现象表明了过去某件事物的状态。

再送一个例子：Mike的一塌糊涂的期末考试成绩表明他在家里没有好好学习，我们说 Mike's bad score in the final exam shows that he did not study hard at home. 他是否认真学习是过去发生的，但考试前我们不知道，成绩一出来，就知道了。虽然是现在才知道，但是这是过去发生的事情，所以用did。
