理想地来说，应该是
The reason (that) he was chosen remains unknown. 口语中that可以不要
或
Why he was chosen remains unknown.
或
The reason for which he was chosen remains unknown.

The reason why...是非正规英语，只是随着人们越来越多的误用而慢慢变得可以接受。而非正规英语的语法很难说清楚，甚至很多都根本不符合语法，比如 long time no see 这句话，毫无语法规矩可言。

所以我的建议是，除非这是作业非交不可，不应该在这种事情上穷追不舍。另外还要说明的是，我是在美国学的英语和语法。绝大部分美国人(哪怕是英语很好的)根本不知道什么是定语从句，什么是状语从句，什么是同位语从句。这些都是中国为了教学方便而使用的工具而已(这不是说，所有的语法都不重要，只是这些从句的分类我看没什么用处)。使用这些工具是没关系的，但是千万别让这些工具变成你的绊脚石。

for which = why
如：He told the teacher the reason why/for which he arrived late.
that
如：The reason that he gave was acceptable.
for that不行，因为介词后只能用witch/whom
