Despite the enduring popularity of his Second and Third Piano Concertos, Rachmaninoff was at his best when composing self-contained character pieces: the Etudes-Tableaux, Moments Musicaux, the songs, and the twenty four Preludes. The essential part of Rachmaninoff’s oeuvre for piano was written in the first half of his life before he left Russia in 1917. Rachmaninoff particularly loved the sound of the church bells in St. Petersburg and the smooth plainsong melodies of the Russian church.

The popular Prelude in G minor, No. 5, has an infectious pounding rhythm, which must be exciting when heard for the first time. The trio, with its beautifully flowing theme and lovely counter-melody, is a very happy invention. The return of the ‘Alla Marcia’ theme, heaving itself up from the bass through a series of transitory modulations to arrive triumphantly in the required G minor, is an excellent contrast. The Prelude concludes with a sudden ending where the theme literally vanishes
