辖内有三元里街、景泰街、同德街、松洲街、黄石街、棠景街、新市街、同和街、京溪街、永平街、嘉禾街、均和街、石井街、金沙街和江高镇、人和镇、太和镇、钟落潭镇等14条行政街、4个中心镇，全区户籍人口754969人，流动人口约70万。 区内兼具有多种地貌。东部和东北部是丘陵地区；林木茂盛，大小水库山塘遍布，湖光山色，风景宜人，有广州市最高的帽峰山（海拔534.9米）和著名的白云山风景名胜区；中部为广花平原，田园沃野，一望无边；西部是珠江水系，河网交织，巴江河及流溪河流经境内，既得灌溉之便，更得航运之利。
