艾克是纽约时报的专栏记者，他因为经历过破裂的婚姻，因此对女人有点感冒而显得尖酸刻薄，而他经常为了截稿时间焦头烂额，更让他沮丧的是他的顶头上司就是他的前妻。为了逃避压力，他只好躲进他常去的酒吧里，当他听到有人讨论马里兰州的一个乡下地方，有个年轻女人玛琪，她曾经有三次和准新郎踏上红毯的另一端时，又因为婚姻恐惧症而逃婚的纪录。这立刻引起艾克兴趣，决定将这个话题写成专栏，并加以冷嘲热讽了一番。
之后他想要印证自已的报导正确无误，於是决定亲自拜访这个小镇，没想到小镇居民却对他的报导大表反感，而正准备与第四任男友步入结婚礼堂的玛琪，更因为这篇报导大感难堪，於是又再度逃婚，并且决定以其人之道还至其人之身，对艾克展开报复行动。两人在一来二去的较量中开始逐渐被彼此吸引。

Ike Graham, New York columnist,the experience of marriage breakdown made him cold and bitter to women. What's more, he alwawys writes his text at the last minute and the publisher hurrying him is his ex-wife. To free himself from stress, he moves to his favourite bar where a drunken man tells Ike about Maggie Carpenter, a woman in Maryland who flees from her grooms in the last possible moment three times. And Ike decids to write it in his column with unsubstantiated teases.
To confirm his story to be ture, he goes to the townlet and found that the residents feel offensive to his report. Maggie is on her fourth attempt to become married but she feels embarrassed about the report and the marriage fails again. She makes up her mind to do the same to Ike and retaliate on him. However, through the bouts,gradually,they found that both of them are attacted by the other.
