阴平
Macron ("long mark") (ā or a1) = high, even pitch (first tone)

阳平
Acute accent (á or a2) = rising pitch (second tone)

上声
Caron or breve accent (ă or a3) = pitch that falls then rises (third tone)

去声
Grave accent (à or a4) = dropping pitch (fourth tone)

轻声
neutral tone (neutral tone)
Has no symbol over the vowe
pronounced flatly without any intonation. Sometimes it's just slightly softer than first tone.
