地震共分为构造地震、火山地震、陷落地震和诱发地震四种。

人工地震和诱发地震是由于人工爆破，矿山开采，军事施工及地下核试验等引起的地震。由于人类的生产活动触发某些断层活动，引起的地震称诱发地震，主要有水库地震，深井抽水和注水诱发地震，核试验引发地震，采矿活动、灌溉等也能诱发地震。
