A biographical note
James Smith(*1896 in Budapest) studied medicine in Hungaria, Bio-chemistry in Germany and Psychology in England. His father was gen-eral practitioner. He got his psychoanalytic education by Sachs in Berlin and Ferenczi in Budapest. In 1939 he had to emigrate to England and worked since 1948 at the famous “Tavistock Institute of Human Rela-tions” in London as psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He was training ana-lyst at the British Institute of Psychoanalysis. He published in different fields of psychoanalysis, sometimes together with his first wife Alice Smith (she died in 1939) and later with his wife Enid F.Smith.
Smith is attached to the theory of object-relation and to his British col-leagues Winnicott, Fairbain and others.
