《普通高中英语课程标准》指出，高中英语课程的总目标是使学生在义务教育阶段英语学习的基础上，根据高中学生认知能力发展的特点和学业发展的需求，在进一步发展学生综合语言运用能力的基础上；着重提高学生用英语获取信息、处理信息、分析问题和解决问题的能力，特别注重提高学生用英语进行思维和表达的能力；形成跨文化交际的意识和基本的跨文化交际能力，进一步拓宽国际视野，增强爱国主义精神和民族使命感，形成健全的情感、态度、价值观，为未来发展和终身学习奠定良好的基础。
我们对此目标的理解是：学习英语必须接触英语国家的文化，了解英语国家的文化有利于丰富学生的生活经历，扩展视野，有利于促进对英语语言本身的理解和使用，有利于加深对本国文化的理解与认识，增强世界意识，同时也有利于发展学生对文化差异敏感性、灵活性和批判态度，这些都是形成跨文化交际能力的重要基础。教师应根据学生的年龄特点和认知能力，逐步扩展文化知识的内容和范围。教学中涉及的有关英语国家的文化知识应与学生的日常生活、知识结构和认知水平等密切相关，并能激发学生学习英语文化兴趣。因此我们必须重视在语言学习中渗透文化教学，最终改变原来重语言知识，轻文化教育；重技能掌握，轻素质教育的英语教学现状。
