书上说：连词that引导的主语从句位于句首时，that不可省略。那它的意思是不是当that不在句首时就可以省略呢？如这个句子：It is a pity that we can't go.此句中that可以省略吗？

这个that也不能省略。在it is ...that中，It 是形式主语，真正的主语是后面的that从句。
一般来说，连词that引导的主语从句的that是不能省略的。宾语从句中的that有时才可省。
