Although the Korean Hangul（韩语） alphabet was created in 1446 and enjoyed some limited use as an independent system of writing, no serious attempts were made to promote it as an independent system of writing until four and half centuries later. In 1896, when a scholar who returned from long political exile in the United States founded a newspaper published exclusively in Hangul. That promising beginning was interrupted by the long period of Japanese domination.
