第一课中第一段 as the evidence began to accumulate.....为什么不是...began to be accumulated....因为accumulate与evidence 为动宾关系
第二课中第一段the big clock which used to strike the hours.....根据sth. be used to do 所以应是the big clock which was used to strike .....

accumulate the evidence 是另一个用法，积累、搜集证据。

used to 是固定的短语，意为以前，表达过去经常的或持续的行为；和sth. be used to do 用来做...不是同一个用法。

I used to live in London. 我过去一直住在伦敦.

accumulate 可以用来形容物也可一是人、

我们可以说： the evidence accumulates.

第二句中，was 是被省略了。
