读者在合上书本之前常常将书签(通常是矩形的纸片或者布料)夹于最后阅读页面中，这有助于他下次阅读时快速找到正确的页面继续阅读。然而这种简单书签只能帮助记忆页面，读者不得不重新阅读一整页来寻找之前是阅读到哪一段落。
精确书签可以精确到最后的阅读段落。这种书签是由长条矩形塑料制成，在书签顶部有一U型切口形成的夹板，用以将书签固定在书页上。此外这种书签还有一片塑料指示条，指示条上下部有两条水平切缝，书签主体以编织的方式穿过。通过这样的组合，指示条可以在书签主体上上下移 动。而指示条上的两条水平切缝的两端向内弯曲，有助于增加摩擦力将指示条固定在指定的位置。当阅读到一定阶段，将这种书签别在书页顶端，然后把指示条滑到最后阅读行，合上书本。下次再重新打开书本时，就能找到精确的段落继续阅读了。
