Thirty years ago, when they were both very young, Romina’s sister Delise contracted a rare form of cancer. Doctors were unable to save Delise and she died at the tender age of five. Years later Romina named her own daughter Delise in memory of her late sister. But neither Grandmother, Maria, nor Romina realized then that Delise, would develop the same rare cancer as her aunt when she was ten years old.
The cancer affected Delise’s kidneys. She had already had eight operations, had lost both kidneys and had to undergo painful nightly dialysis (透析). Unable to sleep properly through her nightly suffering she had become tired and weak. At school she had to have different foods from the other kids, and couldn’t eat potato chips, chocolate or even bananas. In winter she got colder than her friends and couldn’t play outside.
