宾语从句分为3种
1，用于that做连接词的即主句+that+从句
2，用特殊疑问词作为连接词的，就是本句中的how excited。
3，不加连接词，即对主语进行提问
如果用that连接的话，就变成I can't image that they were.句子则不成立了！
they were how excited. 这样的表达是错误的how excited作为表语从句的话就要是个完整的句子，你这样的表达是中国式英语。
只能是I can't image how excited they were中间省略了that
how是关系词，引导宾语从句。how excited不是表语，excited是形容词，how引导用来表程度。而that在此无意义，不能表达这层意思。
