Jazz is the story of a triangle of passion jealousy, murder and redemption, of sex and spirituality, of slavery and liberation, of country and city, of being male and female, African American, and above all of being human. In the story, Joe Trace is in his fifties. He is a door-to-door salesman who migrated from town to the city with his devoted wife Violet. He meets Dorcas, an eighteen-year-old girl, and he falls in love with her. The relationship doesn’t end well, as Joe shoots her to death at a party. During the funeral, his wife Violent tries to disfigure the corpse of her rival with a knife. In the novel Jazz, Toni Morrison described a black family move from town to the city, which is what happened on his father. Both of her parents came from sharecropping families who had moved North in pursuit of better living conditions in the early 1900s, and her father’s family had faced a great deal of discrimination.
