这是定语从句，the place是先行词，还原到从句里是 you left it __the place,是缺成分的。
你之所以觉得它不缺成分是受the coat is in这个in的影响，但这个in是主句里的，并非从句里的介词前置。

you left it应该是in the place的同位语吧。

应该填where,place 是先行词，看起来你说的也对，但是关键是语感吧，不要太抠字眼。
