这里是虚拟语气，他们（如果有钱的话）当初应该买那房子的，但是他们没有足够的钱。
答案肯定错了。。

表转折用but，不是条件句
Would have done是有与过去事实相反的意思在里面，前句意思应为"他们当时都要买那个房子了"隐藏意就是实际未买，而带有明显转折意味，所以用but，理由为没有足够的钱。你可能是没有理解到would have done的意味。
