随着我国对WTO所有成员国开放，大陆市场强大的吸引力必将引致资金雄厚、技术先进、人才济济的跨国公司涌入大陆发展，这必将对以中小企业为主体的台湾企业造成巨大竞争压力。台商在大陆享有的特惠待遇将被取消，台商将与外商站在同一起跑线上相互展开角逐和竞争。另外，由于原有配额和高关税的逐步取消,以内销为主的中国企业可能在世界市场上变成台商的竞争对手。在此，未来如何化解两岸厂商与外商的三角关系，将是台商在大陆能否继续发展的关键。与此同时，在跨国企业向中国市场进军的过程中，台商可利用在中国具有社会、文化和语言之便利与先入市场之优势，增加与欧美跨国企业合作的机会。当前一些台资企业已与跨国企业建立了合作伙伴关系，成为了跨国公司产业链的一部分。例如广达于2000年4月在上海松江投资2600万美元，设立了二条SMT生产线，但为了满足日本索尼公司的代工订单，公司便将生产线增至四条，产量扩增一倍，随后董事会又决定再度增资上海达丰计算机1800万美元。
