关于between和among

老师只是说过“between"用于两者之间，“among”用于三者或三者以上

但是我还是想了解关于他们更全面的知识

如这个完型的空格"the stones went down into the spaces（ ）the big rocks."

石头填补了装在杯子里的岩石的空隙，
照理说应该有很多空隙啊，应该用“among”啊，为什么答案却是“between ”？？?

希望有高手给予指教。。。。。。。

另外在介词使用时among指三者或三者以上 ，between指两者之间。
