组合盆栽相对于一般盆花与盆景来说，不单单能满足人们亲近自然的愿望，还能起到陶冶性情、愉悦身心的作用，更重要的是组合盆载的制作，包含了设计者匠心独运的设计理念，包含了各种托物言志的巧妙，极具人文内涵。本文的核心在于探讨室内组合盆栽的应用现况、制作技巧、风格营造、内涵赋予几方面，重点分析组合盆栽的制作构架；组合盆栽所选用植物及栽培容器的象征风格与人文内涵；组合盆栽装饰品的烘托作用。而本文主要采用理论联系实际的写作方法，以参考资料、实地调查、实例分析三者相结合展开研究工作。
本研究通过对芳村花卉博览园、陈村花卉世界和广州市五大迎春花市组合盆栽的调查，结果显示目前在广州应用的组合盆栽主要有花礼篮、组合植物盆、吊篮、瓶景等四大类。
组合盆栽的是美感、生态、内涵三者有机统一的产品。在满足美学原则及生态原则前提下，为作品赋予一定的精神内涵，是作品价值得以升华的必要途径。因此，通过对东西方艺术流派、地域特色景观、植物象征内涵等三方面探讨，寻求对组合盆栽内涵赋予有指导意义的理论。
制作组合盆栽的步骤主要以下几步。首先是构思作品主题，根据作品主题选择适当的主体植物。例如作品要表达一种高雅清幽的情操则可选择春兰、墨兰等国兰类植物，如要表达热烈、欢快的气氛，则可以选择色彩艳丽的大花惠兰、文心兰等洋兰类植物或者擎天凤梨、莺歌凤梨等凤梨类植物。第二，在完成上述工作之后我们最好选择确定符合作品主题的风格，例如对表达深遂静思的主题可以选择日本古典美学风格作为作品的风格。通过以上的工作，下一步就是根据风格选择合适的客体植物与副体植物及栽培容器，这一步工作必须结合色彩配搭的原则。进一步则是选择适当的栽培基质，从而完成组合盆栽的前提准备工作。最后，设计植物栽植的平面图与立面图，根据设计图确定各类植物的摆放，并覆盖好介质。
组合盆栽应依环境条件和使用目的选择适当的植物及组合形式。再依照不同的使用目的及摆设方法采用不同的制作方法与维护管理方法，选择适合的摆放位置，适时适量的浇水施肥及修剪，同时注意更换植物和防治病虫害。
