一天，汤姆出门找工作。他到处跑遍却仍然没有找到。下午他来到一家工厂，进去一间办公楼并打开了一间很大的房间，里面有个胖胖的男人坐在桌旁。

汤姆转过身，当他走向门的时候，胖男人说：“你看，看到那边那人了吗？”他指着窗外一个男人。“我付他四美元一天。你想要这人工作吗？他已经渐渐老了。当然，我不会给你五美元一天的，只有四美元。”
汤姆沉默了许久。他想到自己的妻子和孩子。但是那个工人也有妻子和孩子。最终汤姆说：“不，我不需要这工作！”
汤姆是对的。他并不想抢另外一名工人的嘴里的面包。
