Human facial expressions differ from those of animals in the degree to which they can be controlled on purpose.
在上面这句话里，to which的作用我不太清楚，很显然，这是一个定语从句，其分解成两句话便是：
1.Human facial expressions differ from those of animals in the degree。
2.Human facial expressions can be controlled on purpose.
很奇怪的是，上面两句话中，没有了to，这是怎么回事？to which在此句话中应有的作用该是什么？请求赐教！谢谢！！！

2.Human facial expressions can be controlled on purpose.
3.Human facial expressions and those of animals are different in the degree.
定语从句说的是程度不同，修释degree.
原句是三句合一。

1.Human facial expressions differ from those of animals in the degree。人的面部表情在一定程度上说是有别于动物的面部表情的。those 在这里代替facial expression
2.to which they can be controlled on purpose.这句话是定语从句！主语they谓语can be controlled 介词on purpose。可见：从句中并不缺主语，to which 应该是做状语！所以，which 应该代替degree,degree 应该是先行词！to which 是to the degree翻译：出于这个原因（在某种程度上）人的面部表情（they)可以有目的的被控制！
3.你的分析吧先行词的指代弄错了，从句中已经有主语，which 就不可能是带主语，定语从句时缺什么补什么！which 必须是有成分的！你的理解没错误，只是指代错了！
degree是程度的意思，to which 表示到了某种程度，而后面那个they can be controlled on purpose 就是修饰这种程
