史家胡同，明朝属黄华坊，清朝属镶白旗，1965年整顿地名时，将京华、官学大院并入，“文化大革命”中一度改称瑞金路十八条，后恢复原名。
该胡同建筑整齐，房屋较好，多为大宅院，据老住户讲，清末中法银行董事长刘福成、名妓赛金花(傅彩云)都有宅第在此胡同内。胡同内51号院为章士钊先生故居。章土钊辛亥革命后曾任教育总长，1949年曾作为南京国民党政府代表团成员参加北平和平谈判，因国民党政府拒绝签订国内和平协定，遂到香港。后又回到北京，参加第一届全国政协会议，随后全家也来到北京。开始住在东四八条朱启钤家，由于两家人口都比较多，居住比较拥挤。1959年，周恩来总理在探望章士钊时，发现了这个问题，便亲自出面解决章的住宅问题。章夫人选中了史家胡同51号院，是一个三进院。章士钊认为，一家人住太大了，便将第三进分了出去。章士钊去世后，由他的家属居住。1984年定为东城区文物保护单位。胡同内55号院，大门影壁上有砖刻和亲王诗，两边还有对联。
