语出西方民谚，西方的民谚原本只有前三句，后来富兰克林将它扩展开来，就成了我们现在见到的这个版本：

For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
