搭配有prefer to do rather than do
would rather do than do （注意，此时than连接两个并列成分，也可以是doing than doing）
instead of意思是代替，强调的也是一种替代关系.所以也可以说有而不是的意思这是由"代替"想到的，因为A物代替了B物，即A instead of B，可以理解为是A而不是B。
I prefer to go out rather than stay at home.我想出去而不是呆在家
Amy instead of Lily will attend the meeting.Amy代替了 Lily去参加会议
也可以理解为 Amy去参加了会议而不是 Lily去参加.

至于区分一下到底什么时候用哪个,就是看它们的搭配以及题目的意思.可以说不会有题目把这两个放在一起考你意思,因为有些钻牛角尖了,只会考你它们的固定搭配,instead of 和instead的区别.

rather than 后面的短语必须跟前面的保持形式上的一致 要么都是动名词 要么都是原型 i want to watch TV rather than do homework.
而 instead of 后面只能跟 动名词 因为 of 再此处做介词用
i want to watch TV instead of doing homework.
两句意思相近 都是 愿意看电视而不是 做作业。
