1. (3 points) Consider the following information regarding a person’s decision to attend SMU:
the tuition is $9,000 per year, room and board is $8,000 per year, and books and materials are
$1,500 per year. When this person graduates, he is expected to make $130,000 per year on
average for the 30 years of career.
Suppose that instead of attending SMU, this person could have earned $65,000 per year
for 30 years by working for SingTel. Also, this person could have attended NUS: the tuition
is only $4,000 per year, room and board is only $5,000 per year, and books and materials are
$1,500 per year. If this person graduates from NUS, he is expected to make $120,000 per
year on average for the 30 years of career.
What is the economic cost of attending SMU?
(Note that we implicitly assume that the interest rate is zero so that tomorrow’s $1 is as
valuable as today’s $1)
a. $74,000
b. $2,024,000
c. $3,632,000
d. $3,674,

here economy cost means the opportunity cost of enrolling SMU.
so we calculate the income(or profit) of choosing NUS and just working directly.
Attending NUS:
total income= (-4,000-5,000-1,500)*4+120,000*30
attending SingTel:
total income= 65,000*30
of course the former one is larger than the later one. so, the former one is the economy cost. checking the late number of the answer and the choices, you can easily find that C is the right one.
in addition, this question is simple about corporate finance. actually, it tests your understanding of npv of an investment. but here, the interest rate is 0, it saves the calculation. next time, if the interest rate is not 0, you should calculate the npv, and compare this number with the others~

good luck!~
