据我所知，英国历史上基本称帝国，1649年5月19日革命成立共和国。1660年王朝复辟，1688年发生“光荣革命”，确定了君主立宪制，之后一直延续。而共和国是非君主体制，英国当时是有国王的。
第二次鸦片战争在1856——1860，根据当时的俗称，应为大英帝国，但是，根据当时签订的中英《天津条约》，当时英国自称 The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
